Yesterday, Valentine's day, I performed the concerto in the wonderful Philharmonie in Cologne with the Sinfonia Varsovia, conducted by Michael Francis. This is how it went!

Also Bonnie & Clyde accompanied me, but you'll need to watch the video straight after the rehearsal to discover the role they played!

What I like about the 1st mvt

by Anne-Sophie Mutter | March 21, 2013

You all know about Dvořák and the new world and that's where I'm talking to you from. So let me tell you about Dvořák and America first and then, as you can see, I have chosen some of my favourite bits from the 1st movement to illustrate how wonderful this violin concerto is.

My team at DG has been so kind as to attach specific musical examples to the end of what I say. Also, big thank you's to the Berliner Philharmoniker, their Digital Concert Hall and Manfred Honeck on the one hand, and the Cologne Philharmonie, the Sinfonia Varsovia and Michael Francis on the other for making it possible to show you the video excerpts.

Presenting the 2nd mvt

by Anne-Sophie Mutter | April 30, 2013

I'm back with some more insights for you on the 2nd movement. With the help of the Berliner Philharmoniker's Digital Concert Hall as well as the Sinfonia Varsovia and the Cologne Philharmonie, I'm delighted to introduce my favourite parts to you.

I also have a little question for you, which is part of the first video. It's about producing colour on the violin, something that's so important to this slow movement. Send your answers to me via DG's email address: deutschegrammophon@umusic.com

I also have a theory on why Joseph Joachim, the famous virtuoso of the time and the work's dedicatee, never actually played the work in public. That's in the last clip, scrolling to the right.

  • The "Lied" opening

    April 30, 2013
  • A sudden contrast

    (bars 40-56) April 30, 2013
  • The chance to be a good accompanist

    (bars 107-140) April 30, 2013
  • Intimate dialogue with the winds

    (bars 156-168) April 30, 2013
  • My theory on why this concerto was never performed by Joachim

The Recording - Day #1

by Anne-Sophie Mutter | June 19, 2013

Today was THE day! I returned to Berlin to start the recording sessions with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Manfred Honeck. It was great to be back playing the concerto with them again after our concerts together in February.

Watch the videos to find out how the 1st day went. I'll be posting new videos and pictures during the next days, so you can follow how the sessions develop.

I'll also be saying something about the post-production phase. It happens separately from the recording sessions. It's not a secret! Well, not between us!

Creating bespoke packages

by Anne-Sophie Mutter

Nowadays there is more than one way to buy and enjoy a new record. There are of course still CDs, and we have been able to buy downloads for 10 years now. More recently a third new way is becoming mainstream - streaming via a subscription. What kind of package is available in which format? I'll tell you how we're going to create bespoke packages for each of these three formats in this section.

Getting the work out

by Anne-Sophie Mutter

This is where I, as the artist, need to get out there and tell the media about this record, so that you hear from them that it exists. What I tell them personally they can use to spice up their articles. I need to talk to quite a few journalists from different publications and different countries. I'll tell you what the experience is like this time around.
