"The Sonata in G major op. 14 no. 2 is intimate and informal in tone. The opening movement’s writing is not polyphonic in character, and the focus on the melodic aspect is accompanied by subtle metrical suspensions. The generally tranquil tone of the first theme is enlivened in the course of the development by bursts of energy which create a direct contrast with the second theme. At the end of the exposition an intense cantabile theme is presented in a magical dialogue between the middle and low registers: another aspect of the varied accents that distinguish this piece."
