8 days in a Schumann "bath"

by Yannick Nézet-Séguin

| March 30, 2014

Making a record is an exciting, challenging and rewarding process. My partner in this enterprise was the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. It was very special to record the Schumann symphonies with them, because together we were able to bring out all the different colours and emotions in Schumann’s music.

In this first series of videos, I am in conversation with my executive producer at Deutsche Grammophon, Renaud Loranger, talking about the recording.

It's spring time in Montreal and that inspires me to talk to you about Schumann's Symphony No. 1, which is titled "Spring Symphony". I have chosen some of my favourite bits from the 1st Symphony to illustrate how special this work is.

My team at DG has been so kind as to attach specific musical examples to the end of what I say.

Symphony No. 4

by Yannick Nézet-Séguin

| May 25, 2014

I'm back with some more insights for you on Schumann's 4th Symphony, which was actually his second. Schumann was so encouraged by the success of his 1st Symphony that he decided in his 4th Symphony to go really further in the form. It was unfortunately not very well received. Probably because it was not very well played. It's a very difficult symphony to make work. Later on Schumann revised it and this is the version we present you in our recording. I'm also delighted to introduce my favourite parts to you. Listen to my new video message to learn more about the highlights of this work.

  • 2nd mvt

Symphony No. 2

by Yannick Nézet-Séguin

| August 08, 2014

I have the great pleasure to be working this summer again with the wonderful Chamber Orchestra of Europe, with whom I've been recording this fabulous set of Schumann Symphonies. When I asked some of the musicians, which was their favorite symphony, I think No.2 had the most votes. Watch the video and listen to my favourite bits to find out what make this work so special.
